Art and Design

Our art curriculum empowers children to express their individuality, creativity and confidence through the study of inspiring artists. Each term at each key stage, pupils explore the work of a carefully chosen artist whose style, message and techniques encourage self-expression, resilience and curiosity, which is also linked to their topic. Children develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media while learning that art is a powerful way to share their ideas and let their own light shine.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, pupils record their creative journey through shared floor books, which support collaboration, discussion and vocabulary development. These floor books capture ideas, photographs and reflections, allowing pupils to revisit learning and develop an understanding of the creative process.

In Key Stage 2, pupils use individual sketchbooks to explore, practise and refine techniques independently. Sketchbooks support purposeful experimentation, resilience and self-reflection, enabling pupils to develop increasingly sophisticated outcomes and articulate their artistic choices.

Across all phases, pupils are taught to evaluate their own and others’ work, use subject-specific vocabulary and understand that art is a process as well as a final outcome. The curriculum supports personal development, promotes creativity and ensures pupils leave primary school confident in their ability to communicate ideas visually and creatively.
